The 2022 Amor Fati Chardonnay opens with vibrant aromas of pineapple, tropical fruit, lime wedge, and toasted brioche. A luscious mouthfeel delivers a cascade of bright peach, apricot, tangelo, green apple, and wet slate minerality. The finish is fresh and quenching with racy acidity and suggestions of Pacific salinity. A brilliant expression of cool-climate Chardonnay from the western extreme of the San Luis Obispo Coast.
The 2022 Chardonnay comes from Norgrove Garden Vineyard, located just 2.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean in the Arroyo Grande Valley area of the San Luis Obispo Coast AVA. Here, sandy marine soils predominate, while persistent coastal breezes and marine layers lengthen the ripening process. These growing conditions allow the Chardonnay fruit to slowly gain ripe varietal flavors while retaining an abundance of native acidity and textural energy. When fruit from this vineyard became available prior to the 2022 harvest, Winemaker Jeremy Leffert jumped at the opportunity to craft a wine from this special terroir.
The fruit was harvested on September 13, 2022 on the cusp of a warming trend. Upon arrival at the winery in the cool morning hours, the fruit was whole-cluster pressed and fermented exclusively in 228-liter French oak barriques, inclusive of 10 percent new oak. After fermentation, the barriques were topped and aged on the heavy lees for 10 months, with 75 percent of the wine undergoing secondary malolactic fermentation. Regular lees stirring was applied throughout the maturation period to develop an enhanced mouthfeel. At the conclusion of barrel aging, the final blend was assembled and integrated in stainless steel for one additional month before bottling.
